Not made for Hostels
I've had a few weird experiences in hostels. Sorry, this is going to be long.
I thought the worst one was going to be the converted car garage into a working hostel where the walls didn't meet the ceiling. Security light flooded my bed. I could hear everyone shagging in other rooms. Probably able to see if I could stand on the bed, but I didn't want to be a creepy perve. No window. Dirty. Bunk bed mattresses you sink into the middle of. Never any toilet roll as the drunk/high stayers liked to use it as decoration. Turns out the receptionist and her boyfriend got done for drug dealing.
That was until I stayed in a hostel where I had very interesting roommates. An alcoholic who had a tantrum having to share the room with a female (me). A lady in her 50s who woke me up one night stroking my arm to brag about sleeping with a 19 year old in a swimming pool. A guy who hot boxed the room while I was asleep and I woke up stoned for work. The worst roommate was definitely a guy with schizophrenia who hated British women (me). I didn't sleep for 3 days/nights. I thought the alien lords he was arguing with in his head would tell him to kill me.
The last hostel I was in was a lovely stream of bad luck. The staff couldn't work out the booking system, was like playing musical rooms as they kept moving people into different rooms constantly. I ended up going from a room with no window or ventilation to a room with a hole in the window and not enough tape it seems to cover it. I found a mushroom growing up the wall. The carpeted floor kept getting flooded from the bathroom. They kept putting towels down instead of fixing it. Half the electrics didn't work. No lock on the toilet door. BED BUGS. They told me it was mosquito bites, I had never encountered bed bugs before so I believed them.
A thief slashed my rucksack and stole my GoPro. He also stole from another girl in the room. I found him trying to sell the other girls stuff online. Filed a police report and told them where they could find him. Nothing they can do apparently. It turns out he targeted us because we were female so less likely to hit him. He kept the room key card from when he stayed in the room a week before he went on his thieving trip. Other girl got her stuff back but apparently he already sold mine and the hostel kicked him out without calling police. Listed my complaints to the hostel manager who seemed to care and said he will speak to his boss but he ignored all my emails asking for an update.
The hostel dryers didn't kill the bed bugs so took my stuff to a laundromat and moved outta hostel. Akwardly got unchanged on the garden deck and put clothes I was wearing in dryer and jumped straight into a scolding shower. I had some bits that couldn't go through dryer which I left out in bin bags in the sun for a few days and then put in the freezer for a few days just encase. It's been about 5 weeks now. Seems to be okay so far but the paranoia is strong.
I should probably stop staying in hostels if it's for more than a few days at a time.
It makes for interesting stories atleast... If you made it to the end.
