Need suggestions for my AZ-UT 72 hours trip on Memorial Weekend
First time posting here guys. I've done 3 short solo trips so far (Solo camping in Death Valley NP for 2 of them). I just found out a month ago that I'm not gonna be working on Memorial Weekend so I decided I finally get a chance to go to Moab, UT. The cheapest available flight is from LAX-PHX (05/24 8:30pm) and going back from SLC-LAX (05/27 10:00pm).
With this itinerary, I'm going to be driving roughly 900 miles alone in a span of 72 hours. (any safety recommendation are welcome)
My main destinations are Monument valley, Arches NP, Canyonland NP, Capitol Reef NP and Goblin Valley SP.
Being pretty late in the planning game, I've only booked a campground in Sedona for the first night (05/24). I'm planning to just wing it the other 2 nights for first-come, first-served campground instead of booking an airbnb, all reservable campgrounds are fully booked around Moab area.
I'm not sure whether BLM campgrounds are going to be available since it's memorial weekend. If they're not, is it okay to just stop somewhere and sleep in the car? I'll probably only sleep for 3-4hours and for most of the night, I'll be awake to stargaze and take pictures of Milky way.
If I can just sleep in the car, should I even bring my tent? It's an extra few lbs I have to fly with from LA. I'm already bringing my 2lbs sleeping bag and about 2lbs chair. Do you guys have any suggestions of what I should bring from LA or it's cheap enough for me to just buy in Phoenix when I arrive?
My full itinerary:
05/24 22:00 arrive Phoenix
05/25 01:30 arrive Sedona campground
05/25 05:00 sunrise Slide Rock state park
05/25 07:00 otw to Monument Valley
05/25 11:30 arrive Monument Valley (lose an hour, different time zone)
05/25 15:00 leave for Arches NP
05/25 17:30 arrive Arches NP
05/25 20:30 Nap after sunset
05/26 00:00 picture time
05/26 04:30 head to Canyonland
05/26 06:00 sunrise in Island in the sky
05/26 10:30 drive to Goblin Valley
05/26 13:00 arrive Goblin Valley + nap time
05/26 15:30 drive to Capitol Reef
05/26 17:00 arrive Capitol Reef
05/26 20:30 nap after sunset
05/26 23:00 picture time
05/27 01:00 leave for Goblin Valley
05/27 05:00 head to SLC
05/27 09:00 arrive SLC
05/27 22:00 fly back to LA
Do you think this is doable? I’m open to any suggestions for my itinerary and does anyone have any experience in getting a place to sleep and shower in SLC for a few hours during the day? Some hotels that I found costs more than $60, not sure whether it’s worth it for only 4-5 hours. Planning to start sight-seeing around 2PM until 7PM.
Sorry for the lengthy post. I just want to make sure I'm well prepared and would like to get some advise from people who have done this before. Thank you in advance!
Edit: after making the post, I just realized that AZ and UT has a different time zone. TAT
