How breaking my leg abroad wasn't all bad
On my first trip solo in China a month ago I ended up fracturing my ankle after tripping up on a pavement and had to return home early...but! it hasn't put me off travelling solo, rather, it's made me more confident about it.
I'm not going to sit here and say everything went smoothly and it was a walk in the park but all the strangers who went out of their way to help me really moved me; A group of girls who barely spoke any English but helped me up and got me a taxi. The taxi driver who drove me to the hospital and didn't charge me. A receptionist from my hostel who sat with me in the hospital for hours and helped translate what the doctors were saying. And all the staff at the hostels, who were extremely helpful and made sure I was okay before I flew back home.
Some of these might just seem like small acts of kindness but when you're feeling vulnerable it means so much.
Hopefully I'll be able to finish my trip with less bad luck soon, but, as I said, this whole event gave me confidence in my own ability to handle sticky situations but also that there are people out there who are willing to help. Even if you're travelling solo you don't need to struggle alone, especially if things aren't going well!
I hope this was more uplifting than anxiety inducing?? On top of that it was a bit of a ramble, so to summarise: ask for help if you need it and make sure you have travel insurance!!
(Because they deserve the plug - the hostels I mentioned, who had amazingly helpful staff, are Yangshuo Sudder Street and Guilin Sky Palace Hostel)
