Help me plan a British road trips

I’ll be staying in Gatwick, ready to get out of dodge as soon as Monday night, likely 9-10pm.

I have a hotel in Gatwick for Monday night but I’m open to leaving anytime, i.e. night train out Monday night to Scotland/Wales and rent a car there OR stay overnight in the Gatwick hotel and rent a car in the early morning.

My flight is out of LHR, Wednesday at 4pm, so probably aim to get to the airport by noon or 1pm at the latest. Probably makes sense to return the car to LHR, no matter where I rent it from, unless I take a train back.

Need suggestion on a place to stay Tuesday night. Don’t care too much for nightlife. Plan to arrive shortly after dark on Tuesday night and head back to LHR as the sun comes back up Wednesday morning, so 4-5 hours away from LHR would be ideal, again, unless I take a train back and and leave Tuesday night. But that means no driving on Wednesday.

Goals: —Beautiful roads —Remote locations —Lots of twists and turns —Think Clarkson Hammond & May —Light traffic (for Tuesday/Wednesday) —Prefer A roads and B roads instead of Motorways (unless it’s a great drive in itself!) —Interesting ruins and buildings to see along the way (but this is secondary to the actual driving and must be short)

Is Scotland too far for this? Possible to take a train all the way up Monday night and drive back down Tuesday and Wednesday (LHR at noon)? Am I crazy to try the NC500 or even the shorter Richard Hammond’s PENIS287? https://www.reddit.com/r/thegrandtour/comments/atvpr7/behold_the_magnificant_penis_287/

Should I stick with Wales? I’ve been to Cardiff but didn’t get to venture further North or West. M4 is so boring and would like to avoid it if I can. Perhaps a trip through Snowdonia National Park would be more realistic?

Thanks in advance!
