Give me feedback on California to New York road trip itinerary
Hi everyone, I’m planning to drive from my home in the San Francisco Bay Area to my college in upstate New York in late August/early September (partly for the experience of a cross-country road trip, partly so that I can have my car on campus this year), and I’d love some feedback on my itinerary/route!
Since I’ll be working this summer and have a limited budget, I can’t take all the time in the world for this trip, but I think I can stretch it to about nine days and so would like to take a fairly scenic route and stop in/pass through a few national parks and cities that interest me along the way.
These are some of the places I’d like to see, even briefly: Las Vegas, NV Zion National Park, UT Arches National Park, UT Boulder, CO Denver, CO La Junta, CO (mostly because one of my grandparents grew up there) Kansas City, KS/MO St Louis, MO Cincinnati, OH (same reason as La Junta) Shenandoah National Park, VA
This is the tentative itinerary I’ve written up. Day 1 and Day 5 are very long, but that seemed like the best option to limit my driving time on the other days. If there’s anything you’d recommend doing differently, other stops along the way I shouldn’t miss, or recommendations for the cities/parks I plan to stop in, please let me know. Thanks!
Day 1: Bay Area to Las Vegas (brief stop) to Zion NP (Google Maps says about 11 hours of driving)
Day 2: Spend morning/early afternoon at Zion NP, drive to Arches NP (5 hours driving)
Day 3: Spend morning at Arches NP, drive to Boulder (6 hours driving)
Day 4: Spend a few hours each in Boulder and Denver, drive to La Junta (3-4 hours driving)
Day 5: La Junta to Kansas City (brief stop) to St Louis (12 hours driving)
Day 6: St Louis to Cincinnati (5.5 hours driving)
Day 7: Cincinnati to southern Shenandoah NP (7 hours driving)
Day 8: Spend the day at Shenandoah, drive to the northern end of the park via Skyline Drive (4 hours driving)
Day 9: Shenandoah NP to campus (6 hours driving)
