Advice on solo travel in Southeast Asia
Hello, I (24, F) will be traveling on Wednesday (4/17) for about a month in and around Southeast Asia. While my calendar is not set in stone, I plan on hitting Hong Kong, Thailand, Malaysia OR Singapore, Indonesia, and Vietnam. I want to have an adventure! My main priority is awakening my taste buds with new and exciting foods. I love to go out, knock back a few drinks and dance but am prioritizing meeting new people and exploring the city/town/island. My budget is pretty wide - $3000 in the month - but do not plan on making ridiculous purchases for 5 star hotels, luxury shopping, and excessive partying. I’m just trying to experience new culture, do yoga, jungle trek, and eat. I’m also planning to do work early mornings and explore during the afternoon/into the night.
That being said, any recommendations for an island in southern Thailand and area in Bali? My office is around Times Square in Manhattan so I’d prefer to avoid mass tourist chaos. Phuket in Thailand is out of the question - I’ve read that Koh Lanta, Koh Chang, and Koh Pha Ngan are good fun. Ubud has caught my eye in Bali but I’m afraid that it’s a bit removed from civilization. You’re free to persuade me otherwise because I’ve fallen in love with the rice fields!
Any suggestions for the trip will be much appreciated! It’s my first solo adventure and while I’m hella excited, the nerves are starting to set. My rough itinerary is below.
4/18 - 4/22: Hong Kong 4/22 - 4/26: Bangkok 4/26 - 5/1: southern Thailand 5/1 - 5/3: Malaysia or Singapore (leaning towards Malaysia bc it’s cheaper but also may forgo both and extend the trip elsewhere - advice needed!) 5/4 - 5/6: Jakarta 5/6 - 5/10: Bali 5/10 - 5/15: Hanoi/Hoi An
Tell me seasoned travelers, is is too much travel? Know any delectable restaurants and cafes? Beaches to swoon for?
