Advice about money while traveling in Italy?
Hello, I'll be leaving in 3 days for a 2-week trip in Italy. This is my first time traveling alone, and I don't really understand what people do in terms of money while traveling abroad. I've already booked all of my hostels and most train tickets. Do you withdraw all the cash you think you need in your home country before leaving for your trip? Do you withdraw that in euros or your home country's currency (in my case, US dollars)?
Do you hide your money in your bag, and leave it at the hostel when taking a day trip? How much do you carry on yourself for a day trip? Do you withdraw money at all from ATM's?
I was thinking I would withdraw at least the amount I need to pay the balance for all of the hostels I'll be staying in, plus extra for food/souvenirs. I would keep most of the money in my backpack, and only take out what I need for the day. Does this seem reasonable? Are you comfortable with leaving money and important travel documents in your bag at the hostel while you take a day trip? I tried to book hostels with lockers-- I think my backpack might be too big for them though. And also, do you keep your passport with you or leave it at the hostel? As a young female tourist, I'm also mildly worried about being robbed... But this might be an irrational fear.
Sorry for all the questions! And thanks!
