Visiting Barcelona. How bad are the pickpocketers and what precautions can I take to avoid getting robbed?
Ive been told it's the pick pocketing capital of Europe. I'm quite concerned about it and am looking for tips to avoid getting pick pocketed.
How bold are the pickpocketers? Will they go after things in zippered pockets? How secure is a money belt? Am I safe to look up directions on my phone in the streets if I need to? I've heard stories of people getting their bags slashed open, straps cut and stolen off the body (though not specifically in Barcelona) . Is this something I should be prepared for?
I don't plan on leaving anything in my back pockets. I'm thinking the same with front pockets.
I have a crossbody bag that sits snug to my side, with zippered pockets. I also have a money belt. I'm thinking I'd put the passport, some cash, and credit card Inn the money belt. Debit card, some cash, phone and portable battery will go in the crossbody bag.
My luggage is basically a big backpack/duffel bag. I'd only be carrying it going to/from the airport and when I'm between accommodations and waiting for check in. I'd only have clothes and stuff in there the zippered opening to the bag touches my back. Is it safe to carry on my back? People have told me to wear my backpack on the front of my body. I'd rather not do that, as I'd look like an idiot and it'd scream out that I'm a tourist. Opinions?
Also, sorry if I'm grossly misinformed and the theft is exaggerated. Pretty much every tourist site I've read warned about pick pocketing. Same goes for everyone I've talked to whose been to Barcelona, so I'm being kinda paranoid.
Thanks!
