I'm thinking about spending between 2 to 5 days in Istanbul, in August. During the day I'd like to focus on the more touristic attractions (although if you have other suggestions, I'd love to hear them!), but I'd like to complement it by sampling a bit of the local night life.

I have trouble finding relevant info about this because I'm not looking for clubs or all night long partying. Rather, I'd prefer to just have a couple of beers at some nice bars and maybe meet some new people.

So for those who've traveled there or live there, what are your experiences with this aspect of Istanbul? Did you find it easy to strike up conversations with strangers there? Is the night life too lively? Is it affordable compared to western European countries, for example?

Any input on this is appreciated.
