Osprey Farpoint 40 vs Stratos 36 for Carry On - Minimalist Solo Travel
Backstory:
In two weeks I'm heading to Japan and Southeast Asia for my first solo vagabonding adventure and I'm freaking out about packing! I bought a Farpoint 40 just for the trip because it is very well reviewed and pretty affordable (I got mine for $80US around the holidays). I'm taking a super minimalist approach, but even with only a couple changes of clothes, a camera bag, travel tripod, and some incidentals the bag is beyond maxed out.
I also have an Osprey Stratos 36 for weekend backcountry hiking. Despite being labeled as a smaller bag I seem to fit more in the Stratos (I think it's all the non-main compartment and the expandiblity), and it is a more comfortable bag.
This would seem an easy decision except the frame in the Stratos is an inch or two taller than the published carry on limits (though we all know it will fit) and it does not include the lockable zippers and packable shoulder straps found on the Farpoint.
Actual questions:
Has anyone had an airline reject the Stratos 36 as a carry on? I've seen much larger bags make it, but I've never been to Asia.
In you're experience are the Farpoint safety features a real advantage?
Thanks for reading!
