From NJ to Northern, CA, I'll have 2-3 weeks and want to see as much as I can, help!

I'll be solo road tripping from northern NJ to northern CA, leaving late April. I'm planning on giving myself between 2-3 weeks to take a super long way, first up the east coast to see Portland, Maine, then through NH and Vermont, down through NY, then straight across the midwest, then through Colorado, north into Montana, Idaho, then to Washington and south through Oregon to my final destination. I'd like to camp as much as possible.

I've never done anything like this before and I'm quite nervous. I pull up google maps and I don't even know how or where to begin. I'd like to mix it up and see national forests and parks but also towns/cities that shouldn't be missed. ANY HELP is appreciated! Any cool geographical sites, towns, river tours, killer breweries- I will honestly take any suggestions to help me plan my route. TIA!
