Contiki or Solo Travel through Europe?

G'day friends and strangers, I just need opinions and discussions about travelling through Europe through Contiki or to plan my own thing.

I freshly graduated High School in 2017 (19 years old) and spent the past year and a half working 48 hours and saving for a colossal of a trip. I am now in the position to fund my travels but now my plans are stagnated due to indecisive and mix reviews.

I plan on travelling for 6 months to a year and I was going to use Contiki to jump start my travel. I am debating whether to travel on the Ultimate European + Egypt (45 Days, $9000 AUD) or to plan my own things. The pros for Contiki include organisation and structure. The cons for Contiki include being held to a schedule and is fast paced. And due to the Schengen Rules, it gives me only a month and half to do anything else I want to in Europe.

The sheer cost of the trip and the Schengen Rules is tempting me to organise my own trip. I want to visit non-Contiki (European Egypt) countries like Poland, Norway, Sweden and all of Europe (particularly West) for longer than 2 days but this will require a lot more effort into planning and I think it would probably be correct to say I'll get more bang out of my buck if I do it myself?

Alternatively, I could do a smaller Contiki and not be chained down by lack of freedom and cost. (The reason why I want to do this trip is for Egypt too).

Is anyone else in this or has been in this predicament? What did you choose to do? Any regrets?

All answers and opinions will be highly appreciated. I plan on leaving Australia mid-year! :)
