Contemplating Trip to Auschwitz
I'm in California and have been wanting to go there for a very long time. I've seen all the documentaries and movies there is out there on it.
I think it is time !
I was just planning on buying a plane ticket to Krakow, find a tour company to join a group and see it.
Then head right back home.
Some of the flights seem to have an overnight layover either in Barcelona or Amsterdam, etc.
The shorter duration flights (about 13 hours) seem significantly more expensive.
So I thought why not actually get off in Barcelona, take a day or two to see the place, stay in AirBnb. The extra cost for this will probably be about the same should I have bought a ticket for a shorter flight.
What do you guys think. Any thoughts / suggestions/ ideas welcome on how I should approach this.
If you guys have suggestions of other WW2 related places to see in Europe that I must not miss, please do chime in.
I also have wanted to check out Stalingrad in Russia at some future point (called Volgograd). I've read quite a bit about the above two in terms of what happened in WW2. So those are on the top of my list.
Omaha beach is also something I would like to see (after having seen Saving Private Ryan, I have to see this one)
Also want to go to Iwo Jima near Japan (interested after I saw the movie Flags of our Fathers and the other one that was from the Japanese point of view, both of them directed by Clint Eastwood, and also saw the series "The Pacific' by Spielberg and Tom Hanks)
Also want to see the Coliseum.
You probably get a sense of the flavor of what I want to look for in Europe. Stuff like the 'Eiffel Tower' or 'Big Ben' or 'Trafalgar Square' etc were interesting to me in my 20s.. but am looking for more offbeat and intense stuff now.
