Big blowout US tour... without driving?

Hi everyone. I'm a female, 21, who's on study abroad in Pittsburgh. I'm currently on a solo trip up to Chicago for spring break (took the Amtrak, staying in a hostel) and I am loving it. I loved the journey, I love being by myself, travelling by myself is so stress free, able to do what I like, Chicago feels perfectly safe. This is my first time in the US and probably my last for a little while, so I'm looking to make the most of it! This is also my first time solo travelling. Coming to the US by myself, travelling by myself... I'm hooked.

After the semester ends in May, I have a little over a month until mid-June to wander around America on my visa. I was hoping that some people had some suggestions as to places to go! I have some money saved up but with Brexit etc I'm expecting the pound to plummet, so looking to book sooner rather than later.

I've been looking at Amtrak again as it's so comfy, and although I'm based in Pittsburgh I'm not opposed to going in any particular direction. I'm not too fussed about NYC, although I'd really prefer to go in any direction but northeast. However, if I get overwhelmingly told to go in that direction, I'm not opposed!

I wouldn't like to spend more than 2/3 nights in the same place. I'm planning on Amtraking or Megabusing it as I can't drive. I'm also a solo female, so places that are safer would be preferred. I like big cities and towns, although if there are more rural spots that are available via bus or train I wouldn't be opposed to stopping there for a few days, especially if it's in the Midwest/South/Southwest, etc. I'm very happy to bunk down in cheaper hostels/coaches especially if it gets me where I'm going. Don't wanna fly if at all possible. Very happy to spend 20+ hours on a train/bus.

ALSO (and I know this is a big 'un), but if there are places with flights back home to the UK to the end of my travel, that would be a genuine blessing.

So far my plan is: Pittsburgh (leave as soon as the semester ends) -> NYC (day trip) -> Philly -> Baltimore (day trip if possible) -> DC -> Atlanta -> New Orleans -> San Antonio OR Austin.

Is this possible? Am I being silly? Could I go further? Should I go further? Any help would be deeply appreciated. Thank you so much!!
