Are conservation "holidays" worth it or are they just a con?
Disclaimer- sorry if a common question but I couldn't find an answer when I searched the sub.
I want to go Africa, and I want to do some hands on conservation work. There are a plethora of companies, charities and organisations that are very eager to get you onboard with one of their schemes where anyone can pay £700-£1000 a week and work 5 days a week rehabilitating animals or taking surveys or removing invasive species or whatever. For me as a solo traveler this is a relatively cheap way to experience Africa, see the wildlife, feel a sense of achievement and have some breathtaking experiences. In comparison a safari would cost upwards of £1500 a week.
I am well aware that there are plenty of cons out there that either get you to play with drugged up animals or use you for cheap labour taking potential jobs away from the locals. I want to know if there are any truly ethical companies that combines doing good for conservation as well as the local community and animal welfare.
I had my heart set on a scuba diving marine conservation course in the Seychelles.
