A week in Japan... where all is worth day trips from Tokyo?
Hey all! I’ve got an upcoming trip to Japan from the USA on the 23rd of April and I’m staying for just over a week (plus travel time). I’ve been before, but only on long layovers, so really all I’ve seen is the town nearby Narita and a bit of Shinjuku (which was cool!).
This time I’m looking to fill in a lot of blanks in and around Tokyo proper. Just was wondering from anyone who has been in the April/May timeframe what is worth traveling outside of the city center for?
I’m sure I’ll hit the usual touristy spots nearby over a couple days (Akihabara, Shibuya, Shinjuku again) but as far as unique day trips, I haven’t the slightest idea.
I’m even open to overnighters elsewhere; Okinawa/Amami Island look like a nice beach retreat and a change of pace from the city, though I’m a little unsure of how easy it’ll be to get around on the islands without a rail pass.
As far as what I’m into: I REALLY wanted to see the Ghibli Museum but tickets sold out online already. Seeing anything similar would make me feel better! Natural spots, shrines, hot springs/onsens would be a cool experience. I’m also a big foodie and want to experience some great mochi and sushi so food recommendations would be appreciated as well! Currently only have the first two nights booked at Wise Owl in Shibuya, so anything after that is open season.
Any helpful tips from my fellow travelers?
