Two weeks in the south of Italy
Hey everyone, time to plan my summer (June/July) solo trip, and the tips in here have been super helpful in the past.
I’ve seen quite a lot of Italy but I’ve never made it much further south than Naples, mostly because there are no direct flights from any of my local airports. I’ve always wanted to see Sicily so this year I’m going to make it happen.
Basic plan, as it stands, fly to Naples and have a couple of nights chilling on the Amalfi coast. Then sail from Naples to Sicily. Spend roughly a week on Sicily. I like variety - a day at some ruins, a day at the beach, a day hiking, a day in an old town. Sicily has plenty I want to see. Then, travel across the south, via at least Matera and Alberobella, to Bari. Sail across, few nights in Dubrovnik then home.
I will only be using public transport which I have always found reliable elsewhere in Italy. Planning to stay mostly at hostels. I usually expect to pay ~€15/night, is that fair for high summer? (I accept Amalfi will be dearer.)
So, any hints, tips, absolute musts? I’m happy to detour a bit for a fair suggestion. I always think a good hostel is worth travelling for, and I’d love to stay in more rifuggios. Also, my favourite beaches are quiet/remote/bit of a hike so I’m definitely happy to travel for a beauty spot.
One minor, minor qualm I have is that I usually mix my travels up with more cosmopolitan cities. The appeal of the south is that it seems much more laid back. Has this ever been an issue for anyone here?
Finally, I’ve always survived with my very limited Italian, will I survive the south?
