Schengen visa tips?
I need a Schengen tourist visa to visit the Schengen area. I'm looking to travel to some places in the Schengen area this summer, I'll potentially be making 2-3 separate trips back and forth from the US. The issue is that I do not know when or where, my work is always up in the air and so I usually decide/plan a trip a couple of weeks before I go. This does not work for Schengen as they're notorious for requiring documents, taking their time issuing the visa, and their issued visas are very restrictive (usually single-entry visa with exact number of days for the booked trip). My question is, any idea how to get a multiple-entry visa valid for a few months?
Some traveler I talked to who is familiar with the process told me a common trick is to book refundable trips about 5 months apart to France and then apply to the French embassy. I'd be potentially be issued a multiple-entry Schengen visa valid for 6-months. The problem is that I've not been to the Schengen area for a while so I do not have an established recent history of traveling there but more importantly, I will not be visiting France this summer (it will be another Schengen country, no idea which one no idea when in the summer). The traveler assures me that this should be perfectly fine. Another person I talked to for confirming this tells me that the immigration officers will see this as abusing the system and will flag me and possibly deny me entry if I end up entering a different Schengen country with a French issued Schengen visa after scrapping my France plans.
Any thoughts about this? Any tips or hints on how to get a multiple-entry visa for at least 3 months? Or is there just no way around this and one needs to solidify their Schengen plans or at least figure out which Schengen country they are visiting and spending the most amount of days in?

EDIT: Just to be clear, I'm not asking for ways to circumvent the rules or do something that's not legit... Just looking for advice on how to legitimately get a longer multiple-entry visa
