Portland to Flagstaff - Recommendations?

A buddy of mine, my dog (pet tax), and I are driving down to just south of Flagstaff from Portland, leaving the 12th of February (tuesday!). Right now our plans are to camp/explore the Steens Mountain area in Eastern OR, then head on to Great Basin NP, then to AZ. As long as we get to Flagstaff by Friday am we're good, so is there anything along that route that we should check out? We're both into hiking/exploring/scenic drives/eating food/drinking beer. Ideally it'd be dog friendly since Teddy will need to stay in the car for most of Great Basin. Here is our google map directions.
