Does anyone else find their idea of 'budget' travel to be vastly different from that of mainstream media?
Media often give three options when they produce travel guides, tips, articles, etc. Ranging from their 'budget' or '$' option to the high end or '$$$' option. Every time I take a look at one of these things the 'budget' option is blatantly not 'budget'. To give an example, I went to Krakow last year, it's incredibly cheap and beautiful. Our hostel (about 3rd cheapest) was what I'd call budget, it was pretty nice and cost just 9€ (£7.82/$10.22) per night. In comparison, the Telegraph's 'budget' option in Krakow was £38 (43.73€/$49.68) per night. I spent less than that on two nights in Barcelona! The cheapest option in the Independent for Krakow was £62 per night!
I get that these are pretty middle class publications, but I find it to be the same for TV shows, travel guides, etc. Maybe relative to these people earning great salaries it is cheap, but it makes me laugh that flying with middle of the range airlines, staying in middle of the range hotels and eating at middle of the range restaurants is considered to be 'budget' travel. I wonder what these people would be like in an eight bed dorm.
