Chicago to Essex, MT in June. First ever road trip with my dad. What are some must-see stops?
My dad and I are driving out to Montana together from Chicago before my upcoming wedding this June. Our overnight stops are:
Rochester, MN Oacoma, SD Rapid City, SD Cody, WY Bozeman, MT
After the wedding, my fiancé and I are doing our own road trip through the national parks and my dad is going to do his own thing so this is just a one-directional road trip.
He is DYING to see the Badlands and Yellowstone, so we’ll hit those up for sure and our route should allow us to spend about a day in each without too much driving. We’re also going to check out Sturgis (he’s into motorcycles). He has no interest in Mt. Rushmore.
I’ve been on a similar Chicago-Seattle road trip a couple years ago so I have a general idea of the route and have seen some of the kitschy tourist attractions/traps (ugh, I fell for Wall Drug!) but I want to see if anyone has any cool suggestions for this trip. (Also advice on doing a 6 day car trip with your dad... I mean we are best buds but this will be a completely new thing for us both.) I’m also recently pescatarian, so if anyone knows of any great veggie food options along the way I’d love to hear them!
We are bringing plenty of camera equipment (he’s into photography) and we each have a pair of binoculars for sightseeing. He is super excited to see some wildlife and we both have no issue getting up super early for that purpose. We have similar taste in music but would probably want to break it up a bit with audiobooks or podcasts as well.
Basically, if anyone has advice, favorite locations, suggestions for what to listen to, or anything in between I would LOVE to see them! Thanks in advance!
