Central Europe ___vs___ questions and hostel recommendations for an aging traveler who isn't dead yet.
I have a pretty good idea of what I'm getting into over 7 weeks this Summer, but am waffling on a couple cities.
I have 9 days between Prague and Krakow this Summer. I'm heading down to Zdiar from Krakow for a few days and then on to Budapest, since I greatly neglected that fine city my first time through. I've pretty well hit (multiple times) places in Germany, traveled through the Balkans (albeit not extensively), and have dabbled in Copenhagen, Rome, and the usual big sites. Generally I get a good feel of what I want to do, but having trouble with this short leg of the trip.
As of now, I've penciled in going to Riga, Tallin, and Helsinki. I understand they are all fine cities, but does anyone regret going to the Baltics or feel I MUST go elsewhere in Poland? Also, re: Helsinki...how does it stack up with Stockholm?
If you do have and hostel/site recommendations for those, that'd be awesome, as well. Google and Hostelworld are my friend, but it's always good to gather info from normal travelers. My $10 all you can drink bar crawl days are, probably, mostly behind me, but I'll be damned if I'm ready for the quiet solitude of the A&O Hostel.
Second: Budapest. My last time through I stayed at Carpe Noctem OG and had a blast. That hostel was also directly responsible for how little time I got to spend in the city vs how much time I spend being in bars / being hungover. As I'm now firmly on the other side of 30, I'm looking for good solo-travel hostels that drink...but maybe don't DRIIIINK (i.e. shifting from Madhouse to Roadhouse in Prague).
So far, I've come across Maverick Hostel, Maverick Lodge, and Meander. Anyone have experience with them? Others you'd recommend?
Thanks!
