1 year solo travelling in south east asia with paid "educational leave"

Hello guys, I'm 24 and from Austria.

A friend of mine brought me to a great idea: He abused a system called educational leave, where any Austrian citizen can put his employment with his current company on hold (with the agreement of the company), and is getting payed for 1 year with 1600 € per month from the government. To get payed my friend proofed that he participated in a Spanish language course for at least 20 hours a week. It was an online course and he basically payed a Spanish student 200 euros who made his homework and exams.

Now I was thinking I could do the same, except I would learn the Thai language, or any other language for real. And combine this while travelling there, since the educational leave allows it.

Did anyone of you ever do something similar to this? How did you handle the visas to stay 1 year in a foreign country? The educational leave in Austria prohibits any extra income which exceeds 400 euros, so a working visa is not really an option I guess.

Are there any affordable language courses in any Asian countries for 20 hours a week, which also give out some sort of certificate or proof for my government?

As one year is pretty long and I don't want to get bored, has anyone of you experiences with unofficial side jobs you can do as foreigners (Helping out at diving schools for free accommodation or cash)? Doing some work or tasks while not spending money would also help with my spending habit (I was 6 weeks in Thailand last year and used 6000 €, which is not really sustainable if I only get 1600 per month).

I am fully aware that there is much research I can do, but I would be also really interested in your personal experiences and things you would recommend not recommend.
