Vietnam or Thailand in April/May
Hello my fellow travelers!
I apologize if this is something that has been touched on before and I have missed it, or if these kinds of questions are not allowed. I will delete this post accordingly if that is the case. I will be visiting Southeast Asia beginning in February. The first two months will be spent with a friend, exploring the Philippines and Bali/Lombok. For the last three weeks of my travels, I will be abroad alone for the first time. I am struggling to decide where to spend this time, but I have narrowed it down to Thailand and Vietnam.
I have been to Thailand before and feel I would be most comfortable there by myself because I am somewhat familiar with the language and culture. I absolutely adored the two weeks that I spent in the north; the experience inarguably changed me forever. However, I am worried about the burning season. It is something that I have researched extensively but I can't seem to pinpoint exactly how bad the air quality will be in April/May. Some sources say it is at its peak, others say it is nearing the end and won't be so bad. If anyone has personal experience with this, I would appreciate the insight! For context, I much prefer experiencing mountain villages and small islands from an anthropological point of view over seeing big cities and tourist attractions. I am thinking that I would spend my time in the north and the less-frequented islands, using major hubs solely for getting from point A to point B.
Vietnam is a country I have wanted to explore for as long as I can remember. My only concern is that three weeks is not nearly enough time to experience such enchanting cultures, landscapes, and food. Ideally, I would like to start by traveling north of Hanoi which I know in itself may possibly take a solid 7-10 days. My itinerary would then lead me to Hanoi/Ha Long Bay, Ninh Binh, Phong Nha, through the Hai Van Pass, and ultimately flying back home from Ho Chi Minh City. Should I save this trip for a time at which I will have more than three weeks to enjoy it?
I would deeply appreciate any and all opinions, experiences, criticisms, and insight. Many thanks and safe travels to you all!
TL;DR I am a 24 year old woman from the US. How bad is the burning season in Thailand during April/May? Is three weeks enough time to experience the incomparable beauty of Vietnam? Which would you recommend?
