Trying to plan a trip (12 days) to either Costa Rica or New Zealand - help me decide please!
Hello, so as I mentioned I have about 12 days to go somewhere and I'm trying to decide between Costa Rica or New Zealand. A little background about me, when it comes to travelling I'm more attracted to things like hiking, mountains, cool sceneries, etc. Not too big of a fan of beaches. I'm 100% comfortable living in hostels and making friends.
So here are my thoughts on each country.
Costa Rica:
- cheaper to fly (I'm in the US); no jet lag
- have a friend and a potential tour guide there
- apparently super easy to get around with shuttles and busses
New Zealand:
- a lot more expensive; potential jet lag to deal with for a 12 day trip; should I wait till I can make it a longer trip?
- going to focus on South Island; also have friends there who can guide me
- lots of potential driving around solo; is it safe for me to drive on the opposite side of the road for that long?
Please let me know what you think! Can I see NZ South Island in 12 days (counting for jet lag, travel time)? What are people's thoughts on either country? If possible please help me plan out potential things I could do with 12 days to spare.
