Today I begin my Middle Earth Journey
Hello Fellow Travelers!
I wanted to mark this date somewhere with other adventure seekers and I’ve been lurking a long time, so I figured it might as well be here.
I’m an older “gap year” traveler. After a rocky divorce, I got sick of my mundane, soul-sucking law job, so I looked into a Work Holiday visa in New Zealand last April after talking to an old employer who moved to New Zealand a few years ago. I hesitated for a while, hemmed and hawed, and finally, last August, I got impulsive and just said, “F*** it,” and booked a one-way ticket to Auckland for today, 1/16/19. I scheduled it right after my 31st birthday as the ultimate birthday present to myself.
Timing could not have been better. I scheduled my last day of work for the day before my birthday. The following week, three weeks into the government shutdown, our court ran out of funding. Being an “essential” worker, I likely would have had to continue working the job I loathed with a passion, for free.
I am now sitting in the airport in Honolulu, kind of overcome with emotion. I am off for an undetermined amount of time to an island around the world. I left behind some wonderful friends, my amazingly gracious family, two beautiful mutts in the care of said amazing family, and someone I love extra dearly.
I will be spending most of my time in Nelson, on the South Island. I’m curious if there are other solo travelers there or planning on coming to New Zealand over the next year. If so, please send me a PM and let me know your plans. I’d love to meet other travelers and get to know your story as well.
Best wishes to you all on your journeys to live an adventurous life!
