Paralyzed with indecision. Where would YOU go?
26F American from NYC here. I'm planning a trip to Europe for mid-fall, starting/possible ending my trip in London.
This will be my fifth time in London and will spend about three/four days there, then I'm looking to travel to a different European city for about four-five days. I've been to Berlin (loved it. To see what the city has gone through over the past few generations was incredible) & Amsterdam (meh - I found it quite small), so my list of potential cities to visit is pretty endless, so I turn to you, r/solotravel. I'm hoping you can recommend one of the cities I mention below, or add one to the list that maybe I haven't thoughout of yet.
My language skills are pretty rough (could maybe manage Spanish) but I'm really good at planning walking routes with Google Maps & navigating around the city. I am a New Yorker after all, so I can get by with a "don't fuck with me" face and putting my head down.
I do not go out clubbing/partying, so that is not a factor for any city, and I'm not a big drinker, though I do love wine. I like to structure my day with one or two "big" items in the morning (for instance, visiting the Tower of London and London Bridge) and then leaving the afternoon free to explore areas as I wander back to my hotel (that's how I discovered Borough Market and Carnaby Street).
I prefer to take myself out to dinner, maybe stop into a pub/bar for a drink (just to get a vibe on the culture) and I'm usually back in my hotel by 8pm or so to plan my next day, and then I'm up-and-out by around 8am.
The top cities I've been thinking about:
Rome
I was looking at Rome, but after reading some recent posts on here, as well as a few other external sites, I'm a bit hesitant given the creep-factor many stated that Italian men have, as well as the city's propensity for pick-pocketers. I absolutely love the Roman era, and how the city is about 10x older than most of America, but not sure if I want to risk venturing around alone. I could maybe see putting that trip on hold for a few years and visiting with a group of people later.
Paris
I'd really like to go to Paris, but with the political turmoil/strikes/riots that've been going on there the past few months, I'm not sure if I want to gamble on the situation improving much over the next 10 months. Has anyone been there recently that can vouch for the state of the city atm? This is probably the city I am most familiar with out of this list, as I took a class about city of Paris in college, studying the city's culture, starting with the construction of the Wall of Philippe Auguste thru present-day, and how it's neighborhoods & culture came to be defined.
Barcelona
A lot of people on this sub seem to be hot on Barcelona, however for I've never had a strong desire to visit the city. Though I'm not sure why this is the case, given the aforementioned love of wine (and tapas!) and how beautiful I hear it is. I don't know much about the city's history - would there be enough to do in ~four days?
Prauge
My grandparents are from the Czech Republic (they passed when I was younger so I can't ask them about their experiences there) and I've always loved the look & feel of the city from what I see in pictures. I understand this may be a smaller city with "less" to do than the others, so I may stay only two-three days if I select this city.
Athens
Finally, I've been mulling over Greece. Specifically, Athens (Athens!!! I mean, talk about a historical city!) However, I haven't heard much about their economy/political volatility in a while, and am not sure if they've stabilized since their economic collapse a few years back.
TY(verymuch)IA!
