Looking for tips ~ Solo to Japan (fall2019)
Hey everyone!
I’m planning a trip to Japan from end of October to beginning of November 2019 {Solo} and as it’s my first time to a country so different from what I’m used to I might need some help/tips. I’ve already looked some stuff up like airline tickets, airports and the JR railpass but I’ll post some questions below if anyone could give some more insight.
• Combination JR railpass and Suica card?
From what I understand the JR railpass gives me access to the bullet trains, most local trains, busses, boats and the period starts on the day you fill in at the ticket counter so would it be a good idea let’s say I’m staying the first 2/3 days in Tokyo to let my JR pass start the day I leave tokyo (winning a day or 2) en then get one of those Suica cards to get around the Tokyo area? I’ve seen that they also accept those in other regions of Japan (anyone used those cards?).
• JR lines to smaller towns
I definitely want travel inland as well to smaller towns and villages. I read that JR pass does not support ALL train lines, was this clear to find out for you guys whilst in Japan? (Like are there signs with JR written on them at train stations so you can see what trains accept it and which do not?).
• suitcase vs backpack
For someone who’s going a bit all over the place travelling by trains and walking in the cities would you recommend to pack a big backpack type to carry or still a suitcase? From what I can tell the metro or trains can get really busy and crowded so I’m afraid having to carry a suitcase all the time might get annoying.
• Is hokkaido worth going?
I have about 16 days to spend in Japan but everytime I look up routes or travel plans they mostly all go from Tokyo to the Kyoto directions and then back to Tokyo to catch a plane back home. Are there people who did a circle around the island: Tokyo first up to Sendai and Hokkaido, then down at the other side towards Kyoto and back to Tokyo?
• What is your experience with meeting Japanese people?
Just wondering because most times they seem to be shy and giggly when meeting foreigners or when trying to speak English :-) I would love to meet some people around my age that maybe can show me around their city or town or just hang out.
• 4G in Japan
Useful for apps and maps, did you guys went for a sim card or one of those portable things?

Just a few things that I was thinking about. If anyone else might be in Japan around that time let me know 😊
