First Solo Trip and I couldn't be happier!
I [37F] have been to Puerto Rico 11 times before with my ex. He's from PR and has a house here. Sometimes we came by ourselves, sometimes with the kids, my mom, friends etc. Although I got over the guy, I still love PR and tried to get friends and family to come with me. Nobody else would go.
Then I got nervous that I'd have a bad time being lonely or thinking about times I was here when we were a family. Then other people kept telling me I was either crazy or brave to come here alone. So I got mob mentality and started thinking that I should be worried too.
Well, I'm here and I'm not worried. I'm having a blast and doing things that I'd never done here before and always wanted to. On my own schedule, driving myself, walking around myself. Chatting up whoever I like, not afraid of my crappy Spanish.
It's the best of both worlds: I'm doing whatever I want during the day and at night, if I go out, there's people to hang out with at any bar.
So: the fun part; San Sebastián street festival in old San Juan, la placita in Santurce. Great for partying. Those weren't new for me. Next, arecibo for cueva del indio (you need to be able to climb unassisted to get into the cave and see the Taino petroglyphs- I twisted my ankle), arecibo observatory (huge radar and lidar transmitter to gather data from space), went to beaches in arecibo and Isabela. Today, I went to two beaches: jobos beach and crash boat beach; swam, snorkeled and napped to rest my foot. Arrived at the coolest Airbnb ever. Living completely outdoors in Cabo Rojo. No walls except for one room with a bathroom. Tomorrow I'm renting a boat in la parguera to go to my favorite snorkeling spot at cayó Enrique and then explore mata la gata. I'm planning on stopping at the marina in Cabo Rojo to get fresh mahi mahi to make for dinner. Later this week, I'm going to go to Isla caja de muerto, go out in boquerón for seafood and some drinks....some more drinks at the seaport in Ponce and then back to San Juan before I go home.
Guys, had I not read about so many of you going to all different places alone, I never would have considered this. This is my favorite travel experience so far. I'm excited to take this to other places that I've been dreaming of now. Thanks for keeping me grounded and confident in myself.
