Hi guys!

I was just wondering if anyone had any insight into Cancun safety for a young female traveler. I'm headed to Cancun very soon for a short, long-weekend trip and didn't really have any concerns until I started telling people about it. Everyone's been warning me to stay out of the downtown Cancun area and just stick to the hotel zone. However, I really wanted to check out the Mercados around there and eat at some of the local restaurants and see the life out of the hotel zone.

Does anyone have any insight on the safety in the downtown area? I am a fairly experienced traveler (have backpacked most of China and did a five-week SE Asia trip with a group of three other girls), so this isn't my first time out of the U.S.
