TLDR at bottom

I just got back from my first trip outside of the US, I hit 10 countries in 2.5 months through Western Europe and had an absolute blast doing it. I’ve lurked around this sub for awhile and love reading about all the highs and lows of everyone’s experience. Thanks for the inspiration!

I wanted to contribute a story on here about a really uncomfortable night I spent in a hostel in Edinburgh because it was so shocking and I never could have anticipated something like it would happen to me

For some context I’m 22 male average college grad and this was a huge trip for me and I had no idea what to expect. My friend from home ended up coming out to join for a leg of the trip and we were having a great time bumbling around Edinburgh about a month into my trip, day drinking plenty of cider, checking out the gothic buildings and having a general good time.

Over the course of a few days we became loose acquaintances with a nice guy from Brazil. We all got to the point of exchanging social media stuff and chatting whenever we saw each other, I didn’t think much of him. We all talked about maybe doing a hike. I’ll call him Dickweed

The hike never happened on account of the massive fuckin wrench that got thrown in the plan the next night. That night my friend and I split a bottle of buckfast and chilled in the common room mingling with people and then headed to bed earlyish. I was buzzed and switched on some Parks and Rex to lull me to sleep and put my head under the covers to block out the lights from the street.

Flash forward to the wee hours of the morning and I feel a knock on my covers. I sleepily raised my head out and saw Dickweed he said “having a good night?” And slid his hand under and grabbed a handful of my dick. Wtf I’m so groggy that I push him off and turn over silently not knowing if I should make a scene.

He left and went to his bunk as I laid for like 15 minutes feeling so creeped out and powerless to do anything because it’s 3 am and I have never had anything happen like this.

I grabbed my clothes and darted out of the room feeling like I was about to have a panic attack. I went to the bathroom and sat in the stall with my head in my hands. I heard the door open and this motherfucker had the nerve to follow me in there.

He started apologizing in probably the worst way I’ve ever heard. “Im sorry! I’m gay! I’ll suck your dick!” He repeated 4-5x. This was so offputting and sickening to me that I let him have it. I told him I didn’t care if he was gay, that touching someone in their sleep is fucked up regardless of anything, that it makes me sick that I have to go sleep 2 beds away from this sick pig, and I told him that he better not be there when I wake up in the morning. Shut the door in his face and went back to bed.

In the morning he was gone. I was feeling so ashamed at breakfast not knowing how to tell my buddy but eventually I just did it. He was surprised but supportive, I was glad he took it seriously.

Thankfully we were leaving the hostel that day. I packed my bag had some coffee and told the girl at the front desk that they have a creepy guy touching people in their hostel. She was very professional and I was glad because It took a lot of hyping myself up to actually go up there and report him. She went through and pulled up his information and told me he was booked for two more weeks in advance but thatshe will make sure he will never spend another night in that hostel. We put on our packs and took a train up to the highlands to do 3 days of hiking and camping and put that BS behind us.

I wanted to post because it always bums me out to see how many people have similar stories and that it doesn’t just happen to women. I’m really happy with how I handled the situation and happy that I fucked up this guys plans and also got the chance to confront him. He deserves to be kicked out of the hostel and it makes me feel good to think that he won’t be lurking around there to assault somebody else. I feel proud of the way I handled it especially because I considered saying nothing at certain points. The fact that it’s all out in the open really allowed me to move on and have a great trip and not feel ashamed.

I wish safe travels to everyone and if you get in a situation that is unsafe or uncomfortable ask for help until you get it. Report the bad eggs.
