8 Days off the beaten path Yucatan, leaving tomorrow morning. No real plans yet. Suggestions?

This is my first international trip in several years, and I'm so excited!

I apologize for that cliched phrase of doing stuff off the beaten path, but you can interpret that any way you wish.

I had originally planned a one month tour of monasteries in Cambodia last fall, but had to cancel the trip due to work and life changes. I held on to my airline credit, though, and saw a cheap fare to Cancun this week and jumped on it.

36 female, if that matters, and I do not speak Spanish though I can string together some phrases.

I came to Cancun once, with my best friend's family, when I was 12, and even then I thought it was so weird that the only Mexican people we interacted with were people who were in service. It was a resort-type experience.

Now, as an adult, I want to travel the right way. I deliberately made no concrete plans because I love the thought of just going with the flow, but I'm definitely looking for some guidance and a loose plan.

I did a search and found this super helpful thread from last year. Based on what I read on that thread, I decided to only schedule tomorrow night in Cancun and then head straight to Valladoid the following day, and I've booked a one night stay in Valladoid. That's all I have planned so far. I'm leaning towards Merida from there, but I could be talked out of it.

Since what I'm looking for is a bit different from what that other poster asked for, I decided to post and see if perhaps folks here would give me different suggestions.

  • it's very important to me to have a non-exploitative, culturally rich vacation that truly gives me a taste of the region. I want to interact with locals in a meaningful way (not only if they are being paid to interact with me) and I want to socialize with other travelers. Picking up a little Spanish would be helpful, but I am stupid at languages and don't expect much in 8 days.

  • beaches beaches beaches. I want to spend lots of time at the beach and in the water. I do want to snorkel, though I will have to buy/rent snorkel gear when I get there because the stuff I bought here has been delayed in shipping. If I can just chill out and read and write for a day or more on the beach too, that would be heavenly.

  • cenotes would be nice too.

  • Mayan ruins. I've already seen Chichen Itza, so I have no desire to see that again. I know there are many others.

I'd love some guidance and anecdotes. Coming from Chicago, if that matters.
