What's a good length of time to stay in Lofoten?
I'm planning a 16 day trip to Northern Sweden and Norway for August 2019. I will fly out late on Friday the 16th and be home (East Coast, USA) on September 1st.
I will spend about 5-6 days on the Kungsleden in Sweden, hiking from Vakkotavarekåtan to Abisko, before making my way over to Lofoten.
Assuming I begin my hike on the 19th (it's a 7+ hour train/bus trip from Luleå, where I land, to Vakkotavarekåtan, so there's no question I'll be spending a night in Vakkotavarekåtan before heading out the next morning on my hike), I'll be in Abisko on the 23rd or 24th.
It takes an entire day to get to Lofoten (Stamsund, specifically) from Abisko by bus and ferry. That puts my first full day in Lofoten being the 25th or 26th.
Given that I have to be in Oslo by September 1st - would you say that I should try to slow down a bit and milk Lofoten for as much time as I can, or stay there for 2-3 days before heading down coastal Norway and popping in to do a couple of day hikes?
As of right now I'm leaning toward the first option, however I've never been to Lofoten, and am curious to hear if people who have been there wish they had stayed longer. If you've been all over Norway, is Lofoten worth being the major destination?
Clearly, hiking is #1 on my to-do list, but I know I'll thank myself later for taking it easy for a day or two. Being on planes, trains and buses tires me the hell out, as does multi-day hiking, so I don't want to be in a spot where I'm spending every other day on a multi-hour bus trip trying to cram as much of Norway in as I can.
Thanks for the advice!
