Japan: Private Hostel Room or Hotel? Mt Fuji Ryokan?
I am planning a three week trip next fall (October/November) where I intend to hit the major points on the "Golden Route". If I go solo, I am looking at a budget of 500,000 yen (~$4500) excluding flight and rail pass.
- Tokyo (2 days)
- Takayama (2 days)
- Kyoto & Nara (5 days)
- Hiroshima & Miyajima (2 days)
- Osaka (2 days)
- Tokyo (1 day)
- Hakone & Fuji Five Lakes (3 days)
- Tokyo (2 days)

I have been taking a preliminary look at the costs of a private hostel room versus a hotel room in Japan and I have seen the prices to be similar. Which of the two options should I go with or would you consider some here and some there? I hate dorms in college and moved out to an apartment as soon as I could.

I want to splurge on a ryokan with a good view around Mt. Fuji. But it seems if you try to book as a solo traveler, you get fewer search results.
