"There's free wifi everywhere!!" Where does this actually hold true?
I just spent 3 days in Singapore without any way to connect to the internet except at my accommodation because I read "there's free wifi everywhere like at train stations" but I couldn't actually connect to it without sim verification. I pretty much gave up making plans with anyone and just went completely solo around for the day, because it was too frustrating trying to keep in contact with people to meet up without either asking for random peoples hotspots, or buying a sim (I would've got one, if my friend didn't show up to hang out with).
Everyone said "there's free wifi in every convenience store in Japan!" which never, ever worked for me.
Hong Kong had free wifi (limited to around 25minutes per day) in subway stations.
Taiwan you needed a local sim to connect to convenience store wifi (from my limited experience before I bought a sim).
All the "free" wifi in Korea needed a local sim to connect to, I couldn't find an actual open wifi when I needed it.
Most of the "free" wifi available in countries I visited are usually only through cafes/restaurants you actually have to pay for to access.
So which cities or countries can you reliably access wifi for free in train stations/subways/shopping malls/etc reliably? Where is this mythical utopian country that's got the goods?
