Solo work trip to the US as a European — Some questions on feasibility
I'm just back from my first 12-day solo trip. I traveled while working remotely and visited 3 different cities in northern Europe. It went way better than expected (also thanks to the advice found here) and dispelled many of my worries. I stayed at hostels and spent a few hours each day working at cafes and the rest of the day walking around after locking away my work equipment. My only regret is not spending more than 4 days in some of the cities I visited.
The thought popped into my mind of taking a step up next year and traveling through the US for a period of 3–4 months. I'm not unfamiliar with the US as I've spend 3 months living there in the past, however I really didn't see much while I was there.
The idea is to travel and work while making my way east or west through a few states, following an itinerary (4–7 days per location) and staying in hostels (or AirBnB if not too expensive). I have a B1/B2 visa that's still valid and it seems to allow stays of up to 6 months.
It's all still very rough, but I have a few questions on feasibility:
- Can I travel and work on a B1/B2 visa? They say you can't work in the US on these visas, but I'm not sure if it applies if I'm employed elsewhere and I'm in the US for no other reason than travel.
- If I enter the US for the stated purpose of tourism, and still try to squeeze some work in, is that risky to do? Realistically, what could go wrong?
- Are hostels generally good/safe/reliable in the US? Can I trust them enough to lock up my work equipment while visiting places?
- Would it make sense to rent a car? Would 3 months' rent be exorbitant? Should I prefer other modes of transportation?
- If I don't do dumb things or go to dangerous places (esp. at night), will I generally be safe enough to be able to carry somewhat expensive work equipment so I can work at cafes and such?
- Are there any areas/cities that I better stay out of entirely when it comes to my likelihood of being safe and being able to work without worries?
