I'll have almost a month in New Zealand and looking for what to do. Main concern is I will not be renting a car. I've backpacked for almost two months in Europe but there was much to do in each city and reliable transportation.

My plan is to start North in Aukland and travel all the way to the southern island. From there I'm going to fly into Sydney. I've found several cities I plan on visiting. I love out door activities and so many look like fun in NZ, but any tips on doing it backpack style? And getting to those fun hikes and tours outside of the city? Also any recommendations on great hostels, places to visit, or fun things to do like swim with dolphins or glow caves. What hostels are best for solo travelers to meet people?
