Rent or Buy vehicle for 4 month 20,000km trip East coast to West coast of USA???
Hey All,
My GF and I are both Australians and we've planned to spend 4 months driving from Boston to Seattle via Florida, New Orleans, South Dakota, Utah, down to San Diego then follow the coast all the way north to Seattle then on to Vancouver. The google map I've linked is not an accurate representation, just the best I could do with the limited number of waypoints maps allows for stuff like this. The trip itself has been planned quite well with plenty of people and places to see already locked in. Rough Map here!
To hire or buy?... I spent a significant amount of time researching the most cost effective hire car options which came out to approx. US$6400 including all necessary insurances and CDW etc that a foreigner needs. Whilst it is fairly expensive, we do have the money for it in out budget.
I recently spoke with a fellow Aussie who just completed essentially the same trip but from West to East with a car which they bought in Vancouver. I had avoided looking at buy a car due to the hoops that ned to be jumped through for a foreigner to buy and insure a car in the USA. My mate explained that buying a car in Vancouver was nearly as easy as buying a car back at home in Australia.
After a bit of Google-Fu today I have found some suitable used SUV's in good condition that would cost roughly the same (if not, slightly less) to purchase and insure as renting an intermediate SUV through Alamo for 4 months. The plan would be to buy a vehicle in Toronto and drive east to west from February.
I'd love to hear if anyone has any comments or advice on which option to go with. At this point, buying is tempting as we could sell the vehicle again in Canada when we make it there at the end of our trip to regain even a small amount of money.
Any tips would be greatly appreciated! :)
