Landed a remote gig and the travel wheels are starting to spin. Some questions inside!

Hey guys.

So, yes. I've managed to get a job that is 100% remote, and after a few weeks of learning the ropes and feeling comfortable with the work itself, I'm starting to think of all of the travel opportunities. I've been searching various flights on Hopper and then running over to AirBnB and then doing the math and thinking...wow, I can actually both afford this and do it.

However, there ARE limitations w/r/t my job. I am required to be reachable by phone during specific EST hours. I also need good and reliable WiFi. These two requirements are non-negotiable. I'll always need a good internet connection and the ability to be reached by somebody from the US during the hours I work. I'm sure this cuts out certain international endeavors (and obviously even certain areas in the US).

So I figure my first few trips will be within the US. I'll do my research and make sure wherever I'm staying has or is close to good internet, and then travel to the shakier areas I want during off hours.

But due to my lack of international travel experience, I don't quite understand the phone game when crossing borders. It's best to have an unlocked phone and then get a new SIM, correct? Or is there a superior alternative?

Tl;dr essentially: what are some great resources and pro-tips for staying reliably reachable by phone when traveling abroad?

Thanks!
