Planning a solo road trip to New York from Orlando Florida

I’m planning to make a little road trip from Orlando Florida towards North New Jersey/New York to visit family. Instead of taking the usual I-95 route up north, I’m deciding to cut through Columbia SC and Charlotte NC, then take I-81 the rest of the way up there. Since the trip will occur in the middle of January, it’ll also be an excellent opportunity to see actual snow (Live in Florida, there’s no such thing as snow). Does anyone have suggestions on places to or viewpoint that might be worth stopping by on this route? It’ll be the first time taking the alternate route up towards the city alone, so any advice is appreciated it.
