Eastern Canada Road Trip Pictures and Review
My boyfriend and I are pretty avid road trippers - last year we traveled a total of 10,000 miles in his 2009 Honda Fit. He loves taking his car different places because it is a bit of a unique beast. It is a base model, manual Honda Fit with over 475k miles on it. So this year we decided to push it a little further and planned a road trip from Newark, Delaware to Gros Morne National Park in Newfoundland. We could not have asked for anything better on this trip as everything worked out exactly as we planned!
Itinerary:
- Drove from Delaware to Acadia National Park (620 miles)
- Explored Bar Harbor and grabbed dinner before setting up camp
- Camped in Seawall Campgrounds
- Woke up at 4am to see the sunrise at Bass Harbor Light House and grabbed REAL Dunkin' Donuts
- Drove from Acadia National Park to West Quoddy Head Light House to Middle River Nova Scotia (590 miles)
- After leaving Acadia we headed to West Quoddy Head Light House which is the most Northeastern point in the Continental US.
- Then we braced for the long trip to Nova Scotia.
- FYI - A toll transponder costs $75 in Nova Scotia
- Southern New Brunswick, Canada was GORGEOUS, the highway runs along the cliffs over the Atlantic
- Drove from Middle River, Nova Scotia around the Cabot Trail and to North Sydney, NS (215 miles)
- Cape Breton Highlands National Park is beautiful and felt like we were driving the Pacific Coast High Way.
- There are a lot of hiking trails in the area that we wish we had time to visit
- Dingwall Beach is very low key and off the beaten path but was one of the most beautiful sights of the entire trip
- Got onto the Ferry to cross from Nova Scotia to Newfoundland (115 miles)
- The ferry is pretty busy, but a great way for Americans (it is expensive for Canadians) to cross into Newfoundland
- We booked a room and it was amazing because we could sleep during the passing and wake up fresh in the AM without wasting any time.
- Drove from Channel Port Aux Basque to Cape Blow Me Down Provincial Park (165 miles)
- This drive was STUNNING.
- The Blow Me Down Trail is a lot harder than it says online - It took us 2 hours up and 2 hours down.
- VERY rocky, if you cannot climb I would avoid this trail.
- Elevation gain was very quick and unforgiving
- However the views are 900% worth it
- Drove to our overnight stay in Cornerbrook, Newfoundland (30 miles)
- This is one of the larger cities on this side of the island. Beautiful views from most parts of the city but everything closes pretty early.
- Drove from Cornerbrook to Gros Morne National Park (90 miles)
- We took the Western Brook Pond Boat Tour due to our limited time and even in terrible weather, it was an amazing tour. Highly recommended.
- After the tour, we explored the park and then headed back to the port
- Gros Morne National Park to Channel Port Aux Basque (225 miles)
- Got back on the ferry to cross from Newfoundland to Nova Scotia (115 miles)
- Drove from North Sydney, NS to Prince Edward Island (330 miles)
- Just for reference the toll to cross the bridge from PEI back onto the mainland is $47
- We stayed outside of Charlottetown and it was peaceful and relaxing.
- PEI was relaxing but we would have preferred to spend an extra day in Newfoundland. There is only so much to see on the island.
- Exploring PEI (50ish miles)
- We went to check out the Elephant Rock which was a pretty cool experience but it was the main highlight.
- Charlottetown is very populated and there was a lot of places to eat and explore
- PEI to Orono, Maine (388 miles)
- Great small town to break up the trip back home. Lots of breweries and places to eat
- Orono to Portland, ME and back home (581 miles)
- The Holy Donut was TOTALLY worth the stop, that sweet potato glazed donut was the best i've ever had.
Read the bold print for tl;dr
Hope y'all enjoy it. If you have any question just let me know :D
