Seeking advice, tips, hidden gems, etc for a Las Vegas-->New Orleans roadtrip
So far my partner and I have a basic outline.
Fly to Vegas (he's never been, this is my 3rd visit) and spend 2-3 days exploring and checking out some off-the-strip sites as well as see Penn and Teller. Pick up a rental car at some point.
Proceed to drive to New Orleans. According to GoogleMaps its roughly 1726 miles straight through, 26 hours to drive without stopping. We do plan on staying over SOMEWHERE for sleep one night--open to camping, etc.
Then we would ideally like to spend 3 nights in New Orleans. Fly back home (NYC).
- Does this all seem plausible to do in 10-11 days? We are meeting friends in NoLa so would like to keep a loose schedule of some sort.
- Am I crazy for assuming only one overnight on the road is sufficient? Two if we stop frequently.
- Does anyone have any suggestions for sites to see along the way? Petrified Forest National Park is on my list as it seems one route goes right through it. Any must-sees, hidden gems, local spots? I understand we are driving through Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, and Louisiana so theres a TON but any suggestions are welcome. We love nature and scenic views/photography and film, weird landmarks, kitschy tourist traps, ghost towns, interacting with locals, and just getting a little taste of the road in each state.
- This will be our first time driving across desert states--any advice for safety besides the obvious (extra water, extra gas, portable chargers, emergency kit etc) Are certain roads or routes more dangerous as far as terrain or weather changes? Do i need a snakebite kit? Satellite phone?
- We are looking to be pretty frugal as gas will add up and Vegas and Nola will probably suck out a decent amount. Is this plausible as well?
