Other than camping, as we'd at least want shower facilities, what are some helpful tips to keep cost down?

Is it simple as choosing a Motel 6 or Super 8? Airbnb? Staying out of town more often than not instead of in town?

Do you roll up and book when you arrive or do you reserve in advance?

Any mobile app suggestions to help too?

Any help would be appreciated. We're from the UK and this is our first trip in the US. We'll be hitting California, Oregon, Washington, Montana, Nevada, Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona, Utah.
