Driving from New York to San Francisco...and back
Hi, a close friend and I are planning this trip. We're leaving 7/23 and have planned about 3 weeks for the whole itinerary. We do have some flexibility and if safety/adventure demands then we could take up to 5 weeks.
Our current route is New York-Rochester-Chicago-Omaha-Boulder-Salt Lake City-Reno/Yosemite National Park- San Francisco-Elko (Nevada)- Yellowstone National Park-Badlands National Park- Sioux Falls- Chicago- Rochester- Boston- New York.
We've been discussing whether we should head to the southwest on our way out west to SF to see the Grand Canyon, Death Valley, and Taos, New Mexico. My concern is might be a little too hot there to enjoy this time of year. We'd really like to do some hiking. On the other hand, I know Yosemite is having some problems with wildfires right now.
Any advice on things to see? We are hoping to see a few of the national parks and beautiful things outdoors. We also like arts/music, if anyone has anything to recommend in that world.
Also interested in advice on safety/what to bring along with us. We have some friends we are staying with (Rochester, Chicago, SF, Boston) and have booked some AirBnB's (Omaha, Boulder, and eventually a few more) but we are also hoping to camp out a few nights in the national parks and potentially sleep in the car along the way.
I've taken one other significant road for about 2 weeks up through New England but nothing of this scale, would love some advice, we are very excited!
