Winging a 1 month trip to Colombia, leaving today
Feeling anxiously nervous but excited. I've got my backpack prepared. I booked the flight two weeks ago without much planned, just a basic itinerary of rough places to go. Looking for suggestions on any day trips, or best ways to go about my trip. I have the first 4 days booked in Cartagena, after that I can go/do whatever I like and am very open to suggestions on how to pass the month. My Spanish is poor, looking to immerse myself for the month and get a tutor while I'm there. I was considering online tutors that way I'm not bound by location.
Looking to budget maybe $40CAD/day once there, is that enough? My hostel for the first 4 days were $17 a night, it looks to be a lot cheaper everywhere else. I'm bringing a 35L Hiking bag and a 18L Daypack. I'm going to keep the 35L in the hostels. No valuables except my LG G4 phone.
The basic plan is;
Cartagena - 4 days
Santa Marta - 1-2 days? Playa Blanca day trip, I mostly just want to to go Tayrona Park, however Santa Marta does look nice, should I stay longer? I heard the cities unsafe now.
Tayrona Park - 2-3 days
Maybe the Lost City Trek
Santa Marta to Medellin
Medellin - 10 days? Maybe longer, would be nice to just chill out in one spot for awhile. I loved hanging out in Mexico City, I'm hoping for a similar experience here, or maybe in Bogota if I go. Paragliding here.
Salento, Cocora Valley - 7 days? Maybe longer. Again I just want to find somewhere to chill out for awhile. I just want a nice view with coffee and my book.
Bogota - I'm not even sure if I want to go, I've heard so many mixed things safety wise. What do you guys think?
Cartagena for return flight
Any suggestions for day trips? Routes? Is Santa Marta and Bogota safe? Anywhere else I should visit that is safe? How can I best learn Spanish while there?
