My flight sequence from hell
Long story and on mobile, apologies for formatting.
So yeah, I just spent 6 months working on a sailing vessel cruising along the Caribbean. Finally, it was my trip to get back to civilization for two weeks before heading to Asia for the summer. Here's how my week has gone.
My flights were originally from Grenada to Trinidad to Fort Lauderdale to London to Copenhagen. I paid for one check in baggage through Kiwi that should have been included with all flights despite there being three different airlines.
I show up to the airport in Grenada about 12 hours early because my ride had a flight in the morning. Waited all day, flew to Trinidad, no problem.
Okay, so I arrive in Trinidad, wait a while to go through immigration and have to grab my bag from baggage claim to check it in again. I get to the desk and the guy tells me that it's not covered and I need to pay 100 usd to check it in again. I beg him for an alternative and he suggests I gate check it. I say fuck man, I have a bunch of camping equipment and a knife and all kinds of things in here that I'll have to throw out. He shrugs his shoulders, I throw out half my things, and move on.
Going through the X-ray machine with 3 carry on bags (regular backpack, guitar, large camping backpack) raises some red flags. I'm taken to the side for a random search and questioning by a really grouchy guy, then arrive at the gate, flight is delayed for 2 hours. More waiting, yeah okay.
So I wait with the rest of the people until BAM! Flight gets cancelled, it's almost 2 in the morning. 150+ angry people start yelling at the two poor flight ladies who are trying to do crisis management on their own. I get rebooked to a flight that's leaving in 14 hours, sadly on arrival I would miss my connecting flights so I have to call the connecting airline to try to rebook my connecting flights. Because I booked through Kiwi, I have to finally call them to rebook things since the airlines can't do anything. You should know how fun customer service calls can be, especially with the little hold music they play as you wait. An hour of this later and I'm still not sorted, all I managed was to get the just cancelled flight rebooked.
I spend the night at the airport. The flight to Fort Lauderdale that they rebooked me on was at 14:00, but surprise, it's delayed again. At 17:30 we finally leave. Great! Progress.
Of course, I missed all my connections by the time I arrive. I get rebooked on a flight to Providence then London then Copenhagen for the next day after a 29 hour layover. So I check into a hotel for the night, but after an hour of waiting the free shuttle never comes. I take a taxi to the hotel and try to salvage my evening with pizza and a hot shower.
Once I get settled, I receive an email that those flights got cancelled too. I get rebooked to go to Canada, then to Portugal then to Copenhagen. So I go online and apply for a Canadian visa. As soon as my payment goes through, that flight gets cancelled, and then I'm rebooked again to go to Cleveland then Iceland then Copenhagen after total 34 hours delay.
Eventually I arrive in Copenhagen after 70 hours on planes and in airports, but surprise! Remember my check in bag that I had to throw out half my things?
It's gone, completely. The airline lost my bag and I only have my guitar and my computer bag at this point. I make a claim and head to my friends house laughing all the way at how crazy this whole thing has been.
It's been two days since then, and I just received an email that my bag was finally found! Now I'm hoping that the karma chameleon will continue to bless me for at least the next few days.
Hope you enjoyed my story! What's your worst travel experience?
