First time Solo Traveler - South America - asking advice

I have whimsically booked a flight to Colombia in October for three weeks, and I was planning on doing a few nested flights to get to some of the other countries in South America.

Even though I don't speak a lick of Spanish or Portuguese, I have romanticized about South America for years, but now that I have actually started researching that there are a lot of mentions of safety issues and violent crimes. (To a point where I am worried that may be I will get a cheap loaner phone to bring instead of my old iphone6.)

I would like some advice and personal experience in travelling through some of the bigger cities in Brazil, Colombia, Peru, and Argentina. So that I would be able to determine itinerary with some peace of mind.

Also, do you recommend AirBnb or Hostel for these places? I am seeing some of the Airbnb being cheaper than hostel, which made me wonder if I should consider it a way to save a few dime.
