Feeling so overwhelmed with my SE Asia Trip. Please help
As someone who just graduated college, I have the fantastic opportunity to travel anywhere I want for two months this summer. After some quick googling/redditing, I decided SE Asia seems like the place I wanna be (likely Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos). This is very exciting for me, but I have NO IDEA what I'm doing because I've never traveled outside the country. Furthermore, I'm doing this trip by myself and feel terrified about it. I'd like to leave asap but am having some concerns, as I'm realizing just how incredibly ignorant I am about everything in this process. Some questions:
- My passport is good to go; do I need to do anything else? I don't have a visa or anything and am anxious that I'll be denied at the border. I've also heard that I need to provide proof of funds??
- I have a visa credit and debit card. Only now has it hit me that foreign transaction fees are a thing. What would you experienced travelers recommend as far as dealing with this? Bite the bullet with the fees, or get a new card? If so, what card?
- Should I get currency now with my credit union or in the airport? Perhaps in Thailand itself? I've never had to use foreign currency before and literally don't know how people normally do this.
- At the risk of sounding incredibly naive, how challenging will it be to navigate airports and SE Asia countries knowing only English?
- Finally, I feel so stressed about booking a hostels. It feels so odd locking something down in another country and I want to make sure I'm in a reputable, safe area. Ideally I'd be in a place with other travelers that I could meet and hang out with. How do you fellow travelers usually book a place?
