Considering Eurorail 28 Country pass. Have some questions about it though.

I think I would do the 1 month continuous option, which would put it at 1,000 if I choose first class.
Questions:
- Is first class worth it over second class?
- How conceivable would it be to sleep on the train? Noise, seat comfort, etc? With either class or only with first class? I plan on getting the most out of my time there, so I'd probably want to do that a lot. It's also only one month.
- How are legs of the trip actually booked, once I have the global pass? Do I just show up shortly before the train leaves? Are trains ever full?
- Does this pass cover all of (or the vast majority of) the major rails in Europe, or is it just one company which only has access to certain rails?
- Are there any better deals that do the same thing?
- I would obviously pre-book a flight into Europe to start this. I like the idea of being flexible once I'm there though. How much difficulty have you had in getting back to the US once you're in Europe, if you didn't have any tickets. I don't have a feel for whether the prices are generally similar, 125% higher, 150% higher, 200% higher, or what.
