Balkan Itinerary Help?
Hi everyone,
I'm planning my first solo trip and I need some advice. I've been studying abroad in Athens for the last four months, and I actually have the opportunity to stay for the summer for an internship and I'm very excited. I have a twelve day gap in housing before my new lease starts, so I decided to plan my first solo trip through the Balkans because I'm interested in the area and it's very close.
Here's what I have so far:
Warsaw (3 days) --> I'm meeting friends from home here, and we have a bunch of stuff planned. This is pretty set.
Budapest (4 days) --> I'm also meeting friends from home here, so I'm set for this one. Is 4 days enough for Budapest?
I realize that these two countries aren't in the Balkans yet, but this is where the solo part comes in for me. I'm having trouble figuring out the itinerary based on flights and buses. My eventual goal is to end up in Skopje, Macedonia (FYROM, etc.) because while in Greece I actually got to take part in and speak at a public forum debate on the naming issue (which was an interesting experience to say the least) and I really want to go to see the public landmarks of contested Greek symbols. By this point I'll have a week left and can't really figure out another stop between Budapest and Skopje. Do you have any suggestions?
I would go straight from Budapest to Skopje and then end up in Thessaloniki (I want to go to the Macedonian Struggle Museum lol), but it's prohibitively expensive to get there from Budapest.
Do you have any suggestions for a city in between the two? I think I would spend 2 or 3 days there. Thanks for any suggestions.
